Chateau Montelena was a Napa pioneer; one of the oldest wine estates in the region with an illustrious history dating back to 1882. Montelena is befitting of its generic French nown, chateau, as it was built very much in that mould.

Wine production halted during prohibition in California, and didn’t actually recommence until 1972 under the ownership of Jim Barret who appointed Michael Grich as winemaker, who has since been succeeded by Jim’s son Bo. Today, the estate specialises in long-lived, powerful Cabernets.

“The 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is another prodigious example of why Montelena Cabernets have been so popular, as well as have stood the test of time. It possesses an opaque purple color, followed by a sweet, jammy nose of black fruits, earth, wood, and spice. Dense, powerful, and full-bodied, with terrific extraction of fully ripe fruit, sweet tannin, plenty of glycerin, and expansive layers of flavor, this wine should ultimately rank alongside some of the most memorable Chateau Montelena Cabernets.” Burghound

“…consistently excellent over an unprecedented period of time…continue to quietly and competently turn out one exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon after another. This winery's 20+-year track record for high class Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon is flawless…Montelena's Estate Cabernet Sauvignons are equivalent to buying blue chip stock. They get better and better with age and as the vertical tastings I have attended so persuasively attest…”
