Smith Haut Lafitte has gone from nigh on the bottom of the class to the very top in a matter of a decade. It offers scintillating quality and fantastic value-for-money from a left bank château, and its wines (and owners) are some of the most charming in all Bordeaux.

Smith Haut Lafitte is owned by the amiable ex-Olympic skier Daniel Cathiard and his wife Florence, who have transformed the property and the quality of the wines beyond recognition since 1990. Smith Haut Lafitte is not classified as organic, but its practices are very much in the natural vein. They make their own organic compost and oak barrels.

Written before the 100 point ranking of the 2009 making back vintages sought after and desired. This is one of the great and few bargains remaining in Bordeaux today “A sensational effort, and undeniably the finest wine to ever emerge from this estate…”

“One can’t say enough about this winery, which may still fly under the radar of most consumers. The fully mature 2000 displays gorgeous aromas of camphor, lead pencil shavings, unsmoked tobacco, plums, and black currants. With full body, a velvety texture, and beautiful weight, richness, and length, this superb wine should evolve, possibly improve for another 15 years. It’s a beauty!”

“An opaque purple-colored effort, the 2000 exhibits beautifully-knit notes of black fruits intermixed with smoke, lead pencil, minerals, and charcoal. Deep and medium-bodied, with laser-like clarity, superb purity, sweet tannin, low acidity, and an intense, concentrated finish, this is a brilliant wine!” eRobertParker.com

"Very subtle and complex, with tobacco, chocolate and ripe fruit character. Medium-bodied, with well-integrated, silky tannins and a long finish. Refined, yet muscular." Wine Spectator
