Highlights include the impressive 2002 Harlan Estate. This little gem is perfect for the cellar. Reviewer Robert Parker (publisher of the Wine Advocate) demands that one go to lengths to obtain this fine wine. Parker suggests "mortgaging the farm" to add this Cabernet-based superior libation to your cellar.
Another Cabernet of note is the 2003 Quilceda Creek. Parker calls this vintage "liquid velvet" and projects that it will come to full maturation in your cellar around 2010-2024.
Syrah: a grape with many names
The Syrah grape was originally from Persia but migrated to France, then Australia, and finally to California. On its travels, the grape acquired a few variations in its references.
After its introduction in Australia in 1832 by James Bushby, the grape began being called Shiraz. Varietals from Australia usually have a sweeter flavor than their peppery cousins in the Rhone Valley of France. Australians are also fond of combining the grape with Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvedre to present full-flavored blends.
When the grape moved from the Rhone Valley to the vineyards of California, they began calling it Petite Syrah. The term has grown to refer to a number of old red grape vines in California and is not very indicative of a specific grape varietal as much anymore.
