Syrah or shiraz?
You might already be aware that these are simply two names for the same grape. The varietal is called syrah when used in French wines, and shiraz when used in Australian. But whichever term you choose, the exquisite taste is the same. The flavors and aroma include pepper, blackberries, and smoke. Usually a medium-to-full bodied wine, this deep red delight stands well against a properly cooked steak.
Originally grown in the Northern Rhone valley, the grape has migrated. It is now grown in almost every major wine region. However, the optimal climate for successful production is in France, California, Australia, and South Africa.
The difference of French wines
When selecting a vintage, it is important to know that unlike most New World vineyards, syrahs from France will not be called a syrah. French wines are named according to their region. Most are blends of different grape varietals, so it is helpful to either examine the label or look it up.
