California red

California is the United State’s most important wine State, in terms of volume, and the Napa and Sonoma wine growing areas are also home to some of the finest red wines in the country and the world.

The Californian wine industry began with Spanish missionaries, but really took on pace after the Gold Rush in 1849, growing with the advent of a railway, when immigrants planted vines from France and Germany (including Krug). They brought great European red wine producing grapes that thrived in the warm climate and long sun hours. Varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir.

The region continued to grow until prohibition, and it wasn’t until the 1960s that it finally began to recover and a new wave of winegrowers moved in from California and beyond. One of the greatest landmarks in the State’s wine history came in 1976, when Californian reds were blind tasted against their great French counterparts in Paris, known as The Judgement of Paris, where several Californian wines were preferred to some of the great château.

Today, California has a reputation for producing vast quantities of quaffing wine, but also for fostering boutique, top-end wineries from great winemakers, as our selection below highlights. Wines that are harder to come by than some of the most sought-after Bordeaux growths.
