Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé Château Grand Mayne 2005 is a dense, full-bodied Saint-Émilion from a great Bordeaux vintage.
Grand Mayne (lit. great manor) refers to the estate's magnificent château built in the early part of the 16th Century to the west of Saint-Émilion, at the foot of the limestone plateau; where the view is as sublime as its wines.
Jean Pierre Nony and his wife Marie Francoise managed Grand Mayne between 1977 to 2001 (when Jean passed away). Jean junior was the son of Jean Nony, a wine négociant from who purchased the property in 1934 in the aftermath of the 1929 stock market crash. Marie-Francoise Nony continues to manage the estate with her sons Jean Antoine and Damien, and the appointment of Michel Rolland as consultant has helped the family account for some of the richest, full-bodied and opulent wines in Saint-Émilion.
“Classic aromas of blueberries, cedar, vanillin, black currants, and spring flowers jump from the glass of this dense purple-colored St.-Emilion. Broad, rich, jammy fruit flavors compete with the full-bodied, highly-extracted style that exhibits moderate tannin as well as excellent overall harmony and purity. This cuvee tends to be made in a dense, chewy style, and the 2005 may ultimately rival Grand-Mayne's brilliant 1998. A sleeper of the vintage!” eRobertParker.com
