Detailed Description
Golden West Condition Report - All bottles are in top condition with good levels, labels and capsules.

Tasting Notes - 25/05/2000: Deep rich red colour, opaque in centre with lighter brick edges. Good intense mature fruit aromas. Nice depth and richness with chocolate, cherry and blackberry fruits coming though. Rounded firm, full palate. Concentrated flavours of raisin and treacle. A smooth velvety finish. Drink now - 2020.

"There is an explosion of fruit and tannins in the mouth but at the same time this wine is in total harmony. Deep dark ruby, with blackberries and violets on the nose, full-bodied, with masses of blackberry flavors, full, hard tannins and a very long finish. Will age for decades." -- James Suckling - 98

"This house must certainly be the Latour of Portugal. Their ports are remarkably backward yet still impressive when young. Of all the vintage ports, those of Taylor need the longest time to mature and even when fully mature seem to have an inner strength and firmness that keep them going for decades. Their tawnys are also among the very best, though somewhat expensive. The 1977 has consistently been at the top of my list of vintage ports in this great vintage, although the Dow, Graham, and Fonseca are equally splendid. It is a mammoth, opaque, statuesque vintage port of remarkable depth and power, but is should not be touched before 2000." -- Robert Parker - 96

"Variable notes. Most recently: corky nose but much better on palate, fairly powerful, forthcoming, firm, good finish. Last noted April 2002 ****?" -- Michael Broadbent 4 Star

"Fonseca, however, is an all-time great (reflected in the price at auction) and it is closely followed by Dow, Graham, Taylor and Warre. These are wines that retain their monumental tannic core, which is swathed in layer upon layer of powerful, fleshy fruit. The 1977s can be drunk now and over the next 20 years but this is a vintage that needs monitoring carefully." Richard Mayson, December 2001 Decanter Magazine

From an OWC purchased in early 1990s. Decanted for 8 hours (we ate early) prior to consumption; poured for my extended family after our Thanksgiving meal. Not as dark as expected, but a brilliant shade of cranberry. From the moment it was decanted, this had a fabulous fragrance of fresh flowers, lavender, licorice and Sultana raisins. Once poured, it was immediately approachable, exuding power and excellent structure. Intermixed notions of black cherry and plum with prominent yet round tannins. Opened in deference to Jenny's birth year and Taylor's birthday, everyone loved this bottle. The aftertaste was long and profound with a very smooth finish. This particular bottle was more evolved than others I have enjoyed recently. 97 points ~ 11/27/08. Roy Hersh - For The Love Of Port.

"...the sublime flavour alone is worth whatever it costs; a peerless symphony of flavour, the best fortified wine, check that, the best alcoholic beverage I've ever tasted; a perfect port; peak drinking period 2018/2025 perhaps even longer! Highly recommended rating - 100." -- USA F. Pacult's Spirit Journal, 1992
