WINE SPECTATOR WINE OF THE YEAR 1997

"In a word, superb. It's full-bodied, moderately sweet and incredibly tannic, but there's amazing finesse and refinement to the texture, not to mention fabulous, concentrated aromas of raspberries, violets and other flowers. Perhaps the greatest Taylor ever..." -- James Suckling - 100

"When tasting young vintage ports, Taylor is always the most backward. Yet potentially, it has the capability to be the most majestic. This classically made, opaque purple-colored wine is crammed with black fruits (blueberries and cassis). It reveals high tannin and a reserved style, but it is enormously constituted with massive body, a formidable mid-palate, and exceptional length. It is a young, rich, powerful Taylor that will require 10-15 years of aging. Compared to the more flashy, forward style of the 1992, the 1994 has more in common with such vintages as 1977 and 1970. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2045." -- Robert Parker 97

"....we started to drink this gorgeous youngster to see what it was made of. With an appearance of purplish ink (it could have been a 2005) the nose was nothing short of exotic with fresh flowers, cocoa powder, intense plum and a bit of heat. Expansive flavors, like swallowing a whole bunch of grapes. Gobs of dense, jammy blueberry and brambly blackberries with a full-body and chalky tannins that showed no signs of astringency. It provided one of the most long-lived and thrilling finishes of any young Port I have ever tasted; showing bright berries and a ton of chocolate on the aftertaste. I can only imagine what this would have been like had we decanted it six to eight hours earlier! This was the fifth time I have had this particular Port since early Nov. 2007, but it was my favorite and least rushed experience with it. We left enough so Andy could evaluate the remainder the following day. I am sure he must have enjoyed it." 98+ points - Roy Hersh For The Love Of Port - 3/8/08

"I sampled the full range of 1994s twice in London, on both occasions blind, with a group of professional friends. We all agree that number one was Taylor." "Very good colour. This is very subtle and very well balanced. At first, a hint of pine needles on the nose. Then very complex. lovely, harmonious fruit. And underneath real intensity. Full, very concentrated, very intense, very classy. Marvellous fruit. Very complex. Enormous depth. Very fine indeed." -- Clive Coates MW, 19 points out of 20

"Scented, herby nose. Very firm, dry tannins dominate, but good rich, ripe fruit is underlying." -- Elizabeth Gabay, Decanter, November 1998, ****
"Thick, creamy nose with vanilla essence, chocolate fudge and fleshy fruit aromas. Vibrant and lively, with good length." -- Harriet Waugh, Decanter, ****

"Classic Taylor, with its scents of violets and herbs. It is developing slowly and carefully, just beginning to let its huge structure open out with some ripe fruit and flavors of vanilla and chocolate. A wine for the long term." Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss, 95 points

"Very deep colour, typical wild roses and violets Taylor nose, lovely lift and length, less massive and more floral than Fonseca." -- Steven Spurrier
