Golden West Condition Report - In top condition for its age with good levels, labels and capsules. "Deeply colored, with smoky mint, tar and fruit aromas, full-bodied, with concentrated fruit flavors and plenty of tannins." -- James Suckling - 96 We've had some stellar Ports in our first day and a half, but this was a great way to start our tasting at TFP! Dark magenta color with a pink meniscus. Powerful, young and delicious with an exotic wild berry nose and spicy cinnamon accents. Rich, mouthcoating and warming on the palate with inviting blackcurrant and plum flavors and near perfect balance. The tannins were ample and round with no astri ngency at all and the texture, pure purple velvet. What can I say, I am a sucker for this particular Port and have always been smitten by it. It's a classy classic and will continue to improve for years to come. I must add, this was a stellar showing and an obviously pristine bottle. A bottle decanted at home at 10.10am noted a very sweet and slightly chocolatey. At 3.45pm after my guests had departed, ripe, liquorice, high-toned. On the palate fairly sweet, rich, positive, lovely, with dry finish. Next at Vintners' Hall in November 2001: not a big wine, but delicious. ...low-keyed nose but 'very rich on palate'.
