Cayuse Cailloux Vineyard Syrah 2014 is a rich, silky hedonistic mouthful - rated 100 points by

Owner/winemaker Christophe Baron is a cult personality in Washington county. Twenty years ago the then young French travelling vigneron turned a field of stones in little known Walla Walla into one of America’s finest vineyards. The terroir reminded him of the cobblestones of the southern Rhône Valley and Châteuneuf-du-Pape, and he has been crafting spectacular Rhône inspired reds ever since. These wines are very hard to come by and available through Cayuse’s mailing list only.

“…a surprisingly deep, inky color, it offers a heavenly bouquet of black olives, tobacco leaf, smoked meats, pepper, blackcurrant and black cherry notes. Deep, rich and ever changing in the glass, with incredible complexity and layers, this full-bodied masterpiece has building tannin, a stacked mid-palate and a great, great finish. It's pure perfection in Syrah, and the finest vintage of this cuvee ever made.

"Enough can’t be said about the quality coming from this estate, and Christophe Baron, who’s assisted by Elizabeth Bourcier, produces, in this reviewer’s opinion, some of the most distinctive and exciting wines on the planet. As I said last year, there’s no secret here, and Christophe simply has fantastic terroir, works his ass off in the vineyard (everything is farmed biodynamically), and then gets out of the way in the cellar.

"I think the 2014 vintage from Christophe Baron will go down as one of the truly great vintages of the estate.”
