Bottle report: Excellent condition.

Chateau Angelus (formerly L'Angelus) is one of the most prestigious producers in the entire Saint-Emilion district – a name synonymous with crafting voluptuous wines.

As a testament to its quality, the 1996 vintage saw its elevation from Grand Cru to Premier Grand Cru (B) status (in the 1955 Saint-Emilion classification: a rare and highly commendable honour only bestowed upon a handful of estates that have made considerable progress since the classification's inception); and in 2012 it was further upgraded to the highest Saint-Emilion ranking of Premier Grand Cru (A) status.

"Medium garnet-brick in color, the 2000 Angélus comes galloping out of the glass with a powerful nose of fragrant earth, damp soil, iron ore and cigar box over a core of prunes, blackberry jam and dried mulberries. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly styled with great freshness and loads of earth and mineral-inspired layers, framed by grainy tannins, finishing with a lingering menthol lift. It is in a sweet spot for drinking right now, although it should go on for another 15-20 years." RobertParker.com
