The 2014 Promontory Penultimate is the newest wine from the Harlan promontory property, with Will Harlan and Winemakers Cory Empting and David Cilli at the helm. Think of it as a more accssible, early-drinking version of the great Promontory Red.

Promontory represents the another great fine wine project of the great winemaker Bill Harlan, who founded the Harlan Estate in 1984 in the stunning western hills of Oakville, above the fabled Oakville benchlands, in the heart of the Napa Valley. The Wine Spectator has called the estate a 'Californian grand cru.'

“The 2014 Penultimate is a wine of magnificent finesse and nuance, the same qualities that make Promontory so special in this vintage. There is a feeling of translucence that runs through the 2014 that is so compelling. Dried herbs, mint, leather, smoke, tobacco and wild dark cherry are some of the many notes that flesh out with time in the glass. I especially admire the wine’s tension, vibrancy and phenomenal finish. The 2014 is so impressive upon opening, but then shuts down quickly in the glass. A few more years in bottle will help soften the noble mountain tannins.

Will Harlan describes Penultimate as a wine made from blocks that haven’t quite reached the fully realized vision required for Promontory. For me, Penultimate is a more accessible version of its bigger sibling."
